The site has been in the care of the Salvation Army since the 1930s, but the new modern training and tourist hub is a far cry away from the Victorian children’s home and gardens John Lennon frequented during his early years.

From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by a ‘family’ of volunteers, with smiles, jokes, a little bit of banter [and we’d hadn’t even left the car park].  Car Park Attendant isn’t the only volunteering opportunity on offer.  You can become involved in all aspects of the project, from gardening, reception, meet & greet, café, retail, admin, fundraising, the list goes on….  the family atmosphere was evident everywhere we went.

Steps at Strawberry Fields resides in the training hub at the rear of the building.  These are tailored programmes designed to provide employment skills, work experience, opportunities to volunteer and qualifications to anyone who has learning difficulties or barriers to employment.  Students have access to two training rooms, opening out onto the tranquil gardens surrounding the facility should some time out be required.  With outdoor vegetable and flowers beds available for those who prefer to work outdoors.  A prayer room is also available for some quiet reflection.

The hub management team are clearly led by the needs of the students and volunteers.  They don’t dictate the pace and intensity of the work. The emphasis is wholly on giving people the chance to succeed, which aligns perfectly with our roles as Occupational Therapists.  We can’t wait to work with you in future Strawberry Fields.
