Correct positioning can be regarded as how the client positions themselves in bed, in their wheelchair, in their armchair or school chair. Clients who have limited mobility are often sitting or lying in one position for several hours per day which increases the risk of skin breakdown, pain, fatigue and further immobility. These are the issues we aim to reduce. With clients who have reduced mobility they find it extremely difficult to alter their position in their wheelchair/armchair or bed and thus rely on others or equipment to assist with this.

Clients posture can alter throughout the day and also alter as their condition improves or deteriorates. It is imperative that we aim for the equipment provided to prevent further deformity.
We can provide detailed assessments which include thorough equipment trials. We aim to trial several pieces of equipment to provide options to the client but ensuring that they all meet the clients needs.
Posture is influenced by a number of issues:
- Muscle tone (i.e. high or low)
- Body shape and size (i.e. height and weight)
- Gravity
- Length of time required to be in a particular posture
- The level of the clients health, well-being or emotional
- state
As Occupational Therapists we look at the client’s relationship between
- Comfort
- Stability
- Function
