Our clients are constantly challenging us to find new experiences for them to try.
With Summer approaching and the weather improving, come more opportunities to get out and about, explore the great outdoors, and try something you have never done before.
This week we visited Debbie at Astbury Watersports Centre to find out what activities and facilities they have on offer.
The centre is located on the edge of Astbury Mere in a beautiful rural location, yet only a short drive away from Congleton town centre. Fully accessible by car or WAV and with free onsite parking, there is a small tuck shop, a good-sized accessible toilet and shower area, and enough here to keep you occupied for a good few hours.
For the adventurous there are a range of watersports to try. Levels of difficulty vary, but as a starting point you could hire out an instructor-led session on a Kata Kanu; two canoes rafted together and seating up to six, with no risk of capsizing. For a greater challenge they also offer canoe and kayak lessons or hires. Or if you’re not fussy about getting wet and think you have the balance, paddle board could be for you, but we challenge you not to take a dip.
If this isn’t your cup of tea, you could hire one of the sail boats and head out onto the mere to explore the surrounding flora and fauna they have here in abundance.
On land the site is fully accessible. However, access to the water’s edge is via a short, hard, sandy slope. Not completely flat, but compact enough that it should be OK to navigate for most wheelchairs. They are working on extending their wooden pier, which fell out of commission when the water level dropped.
For those who prefer to stay off the water, they also offer a range of land-based activities including bushcraft, archery, orienteering and the newly introduced art of axe throwing.
If you do plan to visit, we recommend rounding off your day out with a stroll around the mere. A mile-long track, accessible by wheelchair, that takes you through the woodland surrounding the mere before arriving back at the water centre.
