Introduction: A Valuable Experience at KW Therapy
During my time at KW Therapy I have been given the opportunity to take part in initial assessment visits and writing reports, this has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the variety of needs that clients have in a setting I am unfamiliar with.
Exploring the Legal Litigation Side of Occupational Therapy
I’ve enjoyed exploring the legal litigation side of Occupational Therapy, an area I didn’t know about before this placement and seeing how much help and support you can give. It was so nice to see the OT process done so well, setting goals collaboratively with clients and ensuring they can engage in meaningful occupations.
Transitioning from Paediatrics to Working with Adults
Coming from a paediatric setting, it’s been interesting to work with a range of adults and their unique challenges different to what I am use to. I found learning about the different types of wheelchairs and adaptive equipment eye opening. Being able to try them out and understand all the different options available and I think showing me the misconceptions I had regarding wheelchairs is something I think will stay with me, it was amazing to see how much of a difference the right equipment can make in someone’s daily life.
A Memorable Experience with a Young Client and His BATEC
I also got to be part of a visit when a young client received his BATEC. Getting to see how happy and excited both he and his mum were when he first used it was very nice. I later saw messages from his mum about how they’ve been using the BATEC to go on walks together, and I even got to see videos of him having fun with it. It’s moments like these that make this work so meaningful
Adaptive Technology: Enhancing Independence and Enjoyment
Another particularly memorable experience was working with a client and discussing his adaptive gaming controller. We discussed and tested the adaptive controller for his consoles, getting to play the Nintendo switch using my feet was such a fun session and another experience that I think will stay with me. It was exciting to see how technology could be used to help enhance someone’s independence and enjoyment.
Visiting Headway: A Rewarding and Fun Experience
I have really enjoyed visiting Headway for their activity days and drop-in day, it has been a pleasure to get to know the people who attend and the volunteers there. I was lucky to be able to lead an arts and crafts sessions at one of their activity days, which the people who took part commented how much they enjoyed it.
A Short but Memorable Placement
Though my placement has been short, I’ve felt so welcomed by the KW Therapy team. Everyone has been kind, supportive, and have made me feel like part of the team, even though I’m only here for 6 weeks. I’m going to miss it when my time here is over. Thank you for making this such a memorable experience.
