What to Expect from an Occupational Therapy Bathing Assessment
Choosing the right bath is a crucial decision for individuals with specific care needs. An occupational therapy bathing assessment helps ensure that the selected equipment is not only suitable for the client’s clinical requirements but also enhances comfort, independence, and personal preferences.
A Real-Life Assessment in Action
Recently, one of our clients was moving into a new home with adaptations to create an accessible bedroom and bathroom. To determine the best bath for her needs, her family, and her carers, we arranged a hands-on bathing assessment at an accessible local church hall. Two leading specialist bathing companies, Innova and Astor Bannerman, provided demonstration models to compare.
Key Bathing Features Considered
The client required a bath that was:
✔️ Long and wide enough to accommodate postural bath supports
✔️ Height-adjustable for ease of use by carers
✔️ Customisable with additional features to enhance her bathing experience
Each bath also came with optional spa jets, lighting, and Bluetooth music—features designed to provide relaxation and enjoyment.
Hands-On Trial for Comfort and Suitability
To ensure the best possible choice, the client was hoisted into each bath using her mobile hoist. This step allowed her to experience the baths firsthand, assessing their comfort and practicality. While all options met her clinical needs in theory, physically trialling them led her to eliminate one bath, narrowing her selection to two final choices.
Ultimately, she made a fully informed decision and selected a bath that best suited her preferences. Her final choice included a spa function, lighting, and Bluetooth music, along with a customised colour scheme—demonstrating that accessibility can still reflect personal style!
Why an Occupational Therapy Bathing Assessment is Essential
This experience highlights why a trial assessment is invaluable. While specifications on paper may seem suitable, real-world testing ensures that the equipment truly meets the individual’s needs. Providing clients with choices fosters independence and allows them to make decisions that enhance their daily lives.
