International Women’s Day: Celebrating Women in Occupational Therapy

International Women’s Day Celebrating Women in Occupational Therapy

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in occupational therapy (OT), a profession dedicated to improving lives through compassion, expertise, and resilience. Women form the backbone of this field, making up 89% of all occupational therapists in the UK—compared to 71% of women in the healthcare profession overall (HCPC Diversity data: occupational therapists – January 2024). The dedication of these women is a driving force in helping individuals regain independence and enhance their quality of life.

A Demanding Profession

Occupational therapy is far from easy. It requires a unique blend of medical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and deep empathy. OT professionals work with individuals facing diverse challenges, from physical disabilities and mental health conditions to developmental disorders and recovery from major injuries. The job is both physically and emotionally demanding, requiring patience, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Beyond direct patient care, occupational therapists navigate complex healthcare systems, advocate for their clients, and constantly adapt to new research and best practices. Their dedication and skill make a profound difference in the lives of those they support.

Breaking Barriers and Leading Change

Disparities in leadership and recognition persist across healthcare professions. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, highlights the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for women in all areas —whether in patient care, leadership, research, or policy-making.

Women in OT have been pioneers in rehabilitation science, patient advocacy, and holistic healthcare. They inspire future generations of therapists and drive meaningful progress in the field. Their impact is seen in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centres, and communities across the country, helping to shape a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Honoring the Contributions of All OT Professionals

While we celebrate the achievements of women in OT, it’s also important to recognise the contributions of all professionals—regardless of gender—who dedicate themselves to this essential field. Together, they strengthen communities, improve healthcare systems, and empower individuals to live fulfilling lives.

On this International Women’s Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for all women and girls in OT. Let’s continue to advocate for equity, support career growth, and honour the tireless work of occupational therapists everywhere.
