Arts and crafts therapy is a great way of engaging with our creative clients.
Improving fine motor skills after an accident, illness or injury takes time and dedication. Progress can be frustratingly slow and often it’s easier to give up.
Motivation is far more achiveable when working on a project you enjoy. And even more so if you have an end goal in mind. It’s a distraction from the repetative exercises that are needed to regain co-ordination, control and muscle strength. It’s focus on something you want to do, not something you have to do.
Touch, sight and smell provide an enjoyable multi-sensory experience. Think squishing playdoh through a cookie cutter, the smell of scented markers, or the thrill of exploding a baking soda volcano. What types arts and crafts bring back those nostalgic happy memories for you?
Completing a project gives a sense of accomplishment and pride. Something we all need now and again, but especially beneficial for someone suffering from low self-esteem or depression. It’s a distraction from the trails and tribulations of the outside world. Stress, anxiety and other emotional challenges that are common after suffering trauma.
Our clients often see the best results when they don’t put up barriers and limitations on what they believe they are capable of doing. It’s our job as therapists to introduce the aids and tools that enable them to achieve. Why not give it a try?
