Adapted Bedrooms Can Be Stylish: How Occupational Therapy Brings Function and Design Together

When you think of bedroom adaptations, do you picture clunky hospital beds and clinical-looking equipment? It doesn’t have to be that way. Modern home adaptations are designed to blend seamlessly with your décor, even when needs are complex. With the right advice from an Occupational Therapist (OT), you can create a space that’s safe, practical, and aesthetically pleasing.

Why Does Style Matter in Home Adaptations?

Your bedroom is more than just a place to sleep, it’s your sanctuary. It should feel comfortable, personal, and inviting, not like a hospital ward. A well-designed adapted bedroom can boost mood, dignity, and independence. When the environment feels homely, you’re are more likely to feel relaxed and in control.

The Role of Occupational Therapy

We don’t just tick boxes for safety. We carry out a comprehensive assessment of your needs, your environment, and your goals. This includes:

Functional assessment – How you move, transfer, and use the space.

Environmental assessment – The layout, furniture, and potential hazards.

Personal goals – What matters most to you, from independence to style.

Once the assessment is complete, your OT can recommend solutions that work for you and these days, there are plenty of stylish options available.

Many people assume that adaptations mean bulky, unattractive equipment. While that was often true years ago, things have changed. Manufacturers now design products with aesthetics in mind, offering finishes, colours, and features that complement modern interiors.

Top Tips for a Beautifully Adapted Bedroom

Here are just a few practical ideas to keep your bedroom looking stylish while meeting your needs:

1. Choose Contemporary Bed Frames

Profiling beds are essential for many people with mobility needs, but they no longer have to look clinical. Today’s designs include sleek wooden frames, upholstered headboards, and even custom finishes that blend with your décor.

Verona Adjustable Bed from Willowbrook

2. Hide the Tech

Motors and mechanisms can be discreetly tucked away, so your bed looks elegant while offering full functionality. Some beds even have hidden castors and integrated storage.

Eyre Height-Adjustable Bed from Laybrook

3. Add Warmth with Colour and Texture

Layered bedding, soft throws, and neutral tones help soften the clinical feel. Choose bedding that is easy to wash but still looks luxurious.

Night Lark Linen Print Coverless Duvet from Fine Bedding

4. Smart Storage Solutions

Built-in drawers or bedside tables with integrated charging points keep equipment accessible but out of sight. This is especially useful for medical devices or mobility aids.

Ivy Bronx Smart LED Nightstand from Wayfair

5. Lighting That Works and Looks Good

Motion-sensor LED strips under the bed or stylish bedside lamps improve safety without compromising style. Adjustable lighting can also support better sleep routines.

Carrington Premium Adjustable Bed with Plus Base Technology from Opera Beds

6. Co-ordinate Equipment

Hoists and rails now come in finishes that match your furniture – some even offer custom colours. Ceiling track hoists can be recessed for a minimal look.

Why Bring in an OT Early?

We can help you avoid costly mistakes. We know what’s available, what works for your needs, and how to future-proof your space. We’ll also make sure adaptations meet safety standards while keeping your home looking like a home.

Bedroom adaptations don’t have to be ugly. With the right advice from an Occupational Therapist, you can explore innovative solutions that make your space safe, functional, and beautiful. If you’re considering home adaptations, start with an OT assessment. It’s the best way to ensure your bedroom works for your needs without compromising on style.

Driving Excellence in Postural Care: Insights from the PMG Conference 2025

Our Occupational Therapy Team Reflect on Learning, Innovation and Impact

In July, our occupational therapists and OTA attended the Posture & Mobility Group (PMG) Conference 2025‚ a leading event for professionals working in posture, seating, and mobility. The conference provided a platform for clinical learning, innovation, and collaboration. Our team returned with renewed insight and practical strategies to enhance outcomes for individuals with complex physical needs.

Jo’s Thoughts: A Holistic Approach to Postural Care

Jo, one of our senior therapists, emphasised the importance of adopting a 24-hour postural care model‚ a shift that considers not only seating, but also lying and standing positions throughout the day and night.

Even with extensive experience in this field, there’s always more to learn. The conference really reinforced how vital it is to look at postural care across the full 24 hours‚ not just when someone is seated. That shift in thinking helps us make more meaningful, person-centred recommendations.

Jo’s learning has already informed her clinical reasoning, particularly in assessing complex presentations such as high muscle tone, scoliosis, and progressive neurological conditions. She’s also integrating pressure mapping and other advanced tools to support decision-making and prevent pressure injuries. Crucially, Jo is placing greater emphasis on collaborative care, ensuring families and carers are actively involved in assessments and fittings.

Kate’s Highlights: Adaptive Design and AI Integration

Kate was inspired by sessions that showcased real-world innovation and the value of iterative design:

A case study involving a gentleman who had lost both upper limbs demonstrated how continuous adaptation of hand controls led to a solution that was comfortable, sensitive, and accurate.

Another session explored AI-driven wheelchair technology, where users could steer using headrests and foot pedals. The system intelligently filtered out accidental movements, responding only to purposeful gestures.

It was a brilliant reminder that trial and error is not just acceptable‚ it’s essential when striving for the perfect fit.

These examples reinforced the importance of personalisation and persistence in achieving optimal outcomes for clients with highly specific mobility needs.

Ciara’s Reflections: Customisation and Cutting-Edge Tech

Ciara was particularly struck by the potential of custom-made seating and the growing role of assistive technology:

The idea that cushions and seating can be personally modified to fit an individual’s specific needs was so interesting. Custom-made seating might be a real option for some people.

It’s amazing to see how technology is helping people gain independence‚ especially those who don’t have hand mobility. Using specialised glasses or head and foot movements to control a power chair is just brilliant.

Translating Learning into Practice

Since returning from PMG, our team has been actively applying what we’ve learned:

Trialling new equipment with suppliers met at the conference, including adaptable seating systems and pressure-relieving cushions.

Enhancing assessments with a more holistic, evidence-informed approach.

Strengthening collaboration with families and carers to ensure interventions are practical, sustainable, and person-centred.

These actions are already making a tangible impact‚ supporting better outcomes, greater independence, and improved quality of life for the individuals we work with.

Discover What Disability Pride truly means

from an OT with Lived Experience

Pride – What is Pride?

Pride is often linked to:

Self-respect

Confidence

Dignity

So when you have a disability, how does this relate?

Disability pride….

means not just living with a disability, but living openly, authentically, and unapologetically. It’s about seeing disability as a source of identity, community, and strength, not shame or limitation.

As an occupational therapist with a physical disability, I often find myself at the intersection of two worlds: the clinician and the lived experience. It’s a powerful, sometimes complicated, and deeply personal place to be. But more than anything, it is a place of pride.

Disability pride…

isn’t about pretending life is easy. It’s about rejecting the idea that our bodies or minds are broken. We need to accept our disability and this can be tricky when all people want to do is ‘fix’ you. It’s about embracing who we are — entirely — and recognizing that our experiences bring strength, insight, and value, not that our disabilities are an issue! This acceptance can be a barrier for people as we feel we should keep up with our family/friends instead of looking at how we can adapt things to make it accessible for us and family/friends. Some people can have the thought or opinion that it’s too much effort to adapt the situation or why should people change things just for them? So acceptance as to what you can/can’t do is needed and having the ability/confidence to verbalize this to others. Of course this isn’t an easy process and can take time, it can also be a process that’s repeated several times throughout peoples lives.

When I work with clients, I bring more than clinical knowledge. I bring lived empathy. I know what it means to navigate a world that wasn’t designed with us in mind. I know the difficulty of acceptance, the frustration of inaccessibility, the fatigue of advocacy, and the quiet resilience of adapting — not just for survival, but for joy. And I also know the power of creativity, community, and claiming space unapologetically.

Occupational therapy

is about enabling participation, finding meaning, and supporting identity. Disability pride aligns with that mission. It challenges outdated models of “fixing” and instead centers empowerment, autonomy, and acceptance. I don’t practice OT to “normalize” anyone. I practice to help people live fully — however and whatever that is or looks for them.

I am proud of me and what I’ve achieved physically, it has been a challenge especially as I get older but I’m proud of how we can adapt but also the way it’s taught me compassion, patience, persistence, and perspective. I am proud of the way it defies expectations — mine, and society’s. I’m proud to be me with my disability.

How KW Therapy Helped Tom Gain Greater Independence

When Tom sustained a life-changing brain injury at just 19, his world—and that of his family—shifted dramatically. KW Therapy began working with Tom in 2015, and over the past decade, we’ve remained a consistent presence in his rehabilitation journey. This case study highlights the importance of long-term, collaborative care in supporting complex brain injury rehabilitation, especially for case managers navigating multi-disciplinary input and evolving client needs.

Early Challenges and Initial Support

Tom was referred to KW Therapy while staying at Oakwood ABI Rehabilitation Service. Following a traumatic accident in 2013, he was living with hemiplegia, cognitive impairments, and significant behavioural and psychological challenges. He was wheelchair-dependent, had poor posture, limited upper limb function, and required full assistance with personal care.

Our initial focus was on improving Tom’s mobility, safety, and engagement. We recommended a more suitable powered wheelchair with safety modifications and a heavy-duty manual wheelchair tailored to his needs. We also supported the rehab team with strategies for upper limb rehabilitation and cognitive support, to address Tom’s low motivation and complex behaviours.

Transitions and Setbacks

In 2017, Tom moved to a specialist mental health unit. We continued to support him with equipment reviews and trials, although his cognitive limitations and behavioural responses made progress difficult.

A sensory assessment was recommended to better understand his triggers and support his emotional regulation.

Relocation and Renewed Focus

In 2019, Tom moved to a new unit, closer to his family. Despite initial behavioural challenges, we worked closely with the private team and the staff at the unit to build trust and structure.

We introduced meaningful activities like chess, which improved Tom’s mood, focus, and social interaction.

A volunteer was brought in to play chess weekly, helping to foster routine and engagement.

Community Access and Structure

Recognising the importance of routine and community engagement, we helped secure a second-hand wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) and trained staff in its use. We also created a personalised activity binder to help Tom explore interests like cinema, music, and sport.

In 2021, Tom began working with his own fully-dedicated support workers, allowing for more consistent therapy and structured routines. He now enjoys regular ski sessions, cycling, and community outings.

His involvement in planning his week has grown, and he’s visibly more engaged and fulfilled.

Cooking and Functional Independence

In January 2023, Tom began working toward a new goal—cooking basic meals independently. Initially, he insisted on standing with his walker, so sessions were carefully co-led to ensure safety. Over time, he became open to cooking both seated and standing, exploring different recipes and using both upper limbs.

This activity has become a source of joy and purpose for Tom, supporting his upper limb function, cognitive skills, mood, and healthy eating habits.

To support this, we’ve continued upper limb therapy through exercises, games, and fine motor activities. A spasticity specialist has also been involved to help manage tone and promote better movement patterns.

Housing Transition and Long-Term Planning

In 2024, Tom transitioned into a rental property with 24-hour support—this time, directly employed staff rather than agency workers. Our OT ensured the home was fully equipped with a profiling bed, armchair, shower chair, and full wheelchair accessibility.

Meanwhile, a permanent home was located and purchased in mid-2024. It is now being rebuilt from the ground up to meet Tom’s current and future needs.

Our team continues to work closely with architects and contractors, with the goal of Tom moving into his forever home by the end of 2025.

A Decade of Dedication

Over the past 10 years, KW Therapy has remained a consistent presence in Tom’s life. This continuity has been vital—not just for Tom, but for the wider clinical and legal teams involved. We’ve worked through challenges including epilepsy management, behavioural complexities, and inconsistent staffing at care units.

Progress was sometimes delayed due to funding or staffing limitations, but Tom’s journey has been guided by a multidisciplinary team—including psychiatrists, epilepsy specialists, spasticity consultants, SALT, Physio, OT, and his Case Manager.

Today, Tom is more independent, more engaged, and—most importantly—happier.

His story reminds us that complex brain injury rehabilitation is not linear, and that true progress happens on the client’s timeline, not ours.

How Occupational Therapy Supports Mental Health Recovery: A Key Tool in Clinical Case Management

At KW Therapy we understand that mental health recovery isn’t just about managing symptoms — it’s about restoring independence, purpose, and quality of life. As clinical case managers, you’re tasked with coordinating comprehensive, client-centred care — and Occupational Therapy (OT) is a critical component in achieving those outcomes.

Occupational therapists bring a unique, evidence-based approach to supporting clients with anxiety, depression, mental health problems, and trauma. Through functional, activity-based interventions, OT bridges the gap between therapeutic goals and real-world performance — enabling sustainable, long-term recovery.

Why Include OT in Your Mental Health Recovery Plans?

Addressing Anxiety Through Functional Skill-Building
Clients experiencing anxiety often struggle with avoidance, isolation, and difficulty managing everyday tasks. Our occupational therapists implement gradual exposure techniques, sensory regulation strategies, and structured activity scheduling to help clients rebuild confidence and improve functional independence. These interventions complement psychology by translating coping strategies into daily living.

Combatting Depression with Purposeful Engagement
Depression leads to withdrawal from meaningful roles and routines. Occupation is an important part of an individual’s life that can help to promote positive mental health. Occupation is what OT is all about. Our OT programmes are designed to reintroduce structure, mastery, and enjoyment through personalised, graded activity plans. By helping clients reconnect with valued occupations — whether work, self-care, or hobbies — we actively promote motivation, resilience, and a return to community participation.

Preventing and Recovering from Mental Fatigue and Trauma
For clients facing professional fatigue and trauma, our occupational therapists focus on re-establishing healthy routines, integrating restorative occupations, and building sustainable self-care practices. We give clients an insight into the triggers, building awareness and allowing them to take back control. This ensures clients can not only recover, but are equipped to maintain long-term balance and well-being — a vital factor in preventing this from occurring again.

Trauma-Informed Functional Recovery
Trauma impacts every aspect of daily functioning — from personal relationships to work performance. Our trauma-informed OT interventions prioritise safety, predictability, and client empowerment. Through individualised activity-based programmes, we support clients in rebuilding awareness and trust in themselves, restoring their roles, and regaining a sense of identity and control.

Functional, Activity-Based Interventions: Turning Recovery Plans into Reality

Occupational therapy moves beyond just talking. We help clients practise coping skills in real-world settings, develop daily routines that sustain wellness, and reintegrate into work, education, and community life.

By integrating OT into clinical case management, you ensure that recovery plans aren’t just theoretical — they’re actionable, measurable, and personalised. This leads to:

Improved emotional regulation and coping

Increased engagement in meaningful activities

Greater autonomy in daily life

Reduced hospitalisation and crisis episodes

Partnering with KW Therapy : Expertise You Can Trust

At KW Therapy we specialise in occupational therapy services that support mental health recovery at every stage. Our therapists work collaboratively with case managers, clients, clinicians, and families to design targeted interventions that fit seamlessly into individualised care plans.

Whether you’re coordinating services for clients transitioning out of acute care, managing complex community-based cases, or supporting long-term rehabilitation, our team offers the clinical expertise and practical tools you need to achieve better outcomes.

Together, we can help clients move beyond survival — and towards a life filled with purpose, connection, and hope.

OT Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep: The strategies we use to restore restfulness

Sleep is the foundation of health and well-being, yet many individuals struggle with getting the rest they need. As occupational therapists, we understand the importance of sleep as a daily occupation that impacts every aspect of life. This World Sleep Day, let’s explore factors that influence sleep, and how occupational therapy can support better sleep hygiene, particularly after an accident or illness.

How Much Sleep Do We Need?

The amount of sleep required varies by age, with general recommendations as follows:

Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours per day

Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours per day (including naps)

Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours per day (including naps)

Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours per day

School-aged children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours per night

Teenagers (13-18 years): 8-10 hours per night

Adults (18-64 years): 7-9 hours per night

Older adults (65+ years): 7-8 hours per night

Getting enough sleep is crucial for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall physical health. But what happens when sleep is disrupted?

What Prevents A Good Night’s Sleep?

Many factors can prevent us from having a good night’s sleep, including illness or injury, environmental conditions, and daily activities. Below, we explore these influences and give some OT tips to help restore restfulness and promote a good night’s sleep.

1. Sleep After an Accident or Illness

Recovery from an accident or illness often results in sleep disturbances due to pain, medication side effects, stress, or altered routines. Occupational therapists can provide targeted interventions to restore sleep quality and promote healing.

Pain Management: Discomfort from injury or illness makes it difficult to find a restful position. OT Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep: Use supportive pillows, specialised mattresses, and heat/cold therapy to reduce pressure points and pain.

Medication Side Effects: Some medications disrupt sleep cycles or cause drowsiness at unusual times. OT Tips: Work with healthcare providers to adjust medication timing and explore relaxation techniques like deep breathing or guided imagery.

Rebuilding Sleep Routines: Being bedridden or experiencing disrupted daytime activity can throw off sleep-wake cycles. OT Tips: Gradually reintegrate daily routines, increase exposure to natural light during the day, and set structured bedtime habits to re-establish a healthy rhythm.

Emotional and Mental Health Factors: Anxiety, stress, or depression after an injury can lead to racing thoughts and difficulty falling asleep. OT Tips: Implement stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, journaling, or progressive muscle relaxation to calm the mind before bed.

Adjusting the Sleep Environment: Hospital stays or changes in home settings can be noisy, uncomfortable, or unfamiliar. OT Tips: Introduce noise reduction strategies (earplugs, white noise), adjust lighting to mimic natural sleep cycles, and use calming scents like lavender.

2. The Body’s Influence on Sleep

Circadian Rhythms: The body’s internal clock regulates sleep-wake cycles. OT Tips: Establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine to strengthen natural rhythms.

Hormones: Melatonin and cortisol influence sleep cycles. OT Tips: Reduce screen time before bed and practice relaxation techniques to support natural melatonin production.

3. Environmental Factors

Lighting: Bright screens suppress melatonin. OT Tips: Use blue light filters and dim lighting in the evening to promote sleep readiness.

Noise Levels: Disruptions from noise can prevent restful sleep. OT Tips: Introduce white noise, earplugs, calming sounds or relaxing music.

Temperature and Comfort: Uncomfortable bedding or extreme room temperatures affect sleep. OT Tips: Optimise sleep conditions with breathable bedding and temperature regulation techniques.

4. Daily Activities and Their Impact on Sleep

Physical Activity: Regular exercise promotes better sleep, but intense workouts too close to bedtime may be counterproductive. OT Tips: Engage in physical activity earlier in the day to support energy regulation.

Diet and Stimulants: Caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals before bed can interfere with sleep. OT Tips: Reduce intake of stimulants and opt for sleep-promoting foods like herbal teas or light snacks.

Routine and Habits: Irregular sleep schedules and inconsistent bedtime routines can lead to difficulty falling asleep. OT Tips: Create structured, relaxing bedtime routines to signal the body it’s time for rest.

Screen Time: Excessive electronic use before bed affects sleep quality. OT Tips: Set screen curfews and engage in calming pre-sleep activities like reading or stretching.

Final Thoughts

Sleep is a vital part of life, influencing both physical and mental health. This World Sleep Day, let’s prioritise a good night’s sleep. If sleep problems do persist, we can help you develop personalised strategies for better rest and improved well-being.

International Women’s Day Celebrating Women in Occupational Therapy

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in occupational therapy (OT), a profession dedicated to improving lives through compassion, expertise, and resilience. Women form the backbone of this field, making up 89% of all occupational therapists in the UK—compared to 71% of women in the healthcare profession overall (HCPC Diversity data: occupational therapists – January 2024). The dedication of these women is a driving force in helping individuals regain independence and enhance their quality of life.

A Demanding Profession

Occupational therapy is far from easy. It requires a unique blend of medical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and deep empathy. OT professionals work with individuals facing diverse challenges, from physical disabilities and mental health conditions to developmental disorders and recovery from major injuries. The job is both physically and emotionally demanding, requiring patience, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Beyond direct patient care, occupational therapists navigate complex healthcare systems, advocate for their clients, and constantly adapt to new research and best practices. Their dedication and skill make a profound difference in the lives of those they support.

Breaking Barriers and Leading Change

Disparities in leadership and recognition persist across healthcare professions. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, highlights the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for women in all areas —whether in patient care, leadership, research, or policy-making.

Women in OT have been pioneers in rehabilitation science, patient advocacy, and holistic healthcare. They inspire future generations of therapists and drive meaningful progress in the field. Their impact is seen in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centres, and communities across the country, helping to shape a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Honoring the Contributions of All OT Professionals

While we celebrate the achievements of women in OT, it’s also important to recognise the contributions of all professionals—regardless of gender—who dedicate themselves to this essential field. Together, they strengthen communities, improve healthcare systems, and empower individuals to live fulfilling lives.

On this International Women’s Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for all women and girls in OT. Let’s continue to advocate for equity, support career growth, and honour the tireless work of occupational therapists everywhere.
