🌄 Finding Accessible Sports: A Guide for Amputees…and others

Where you live shouldn’t limit your access to sport and physical activity. Whether you’re an amputee or support someone who is, this guide will help you find accessible and inclusive sporting opportunities — from football to fishing — even in the most remote parts of the country.

🏡 1. Start with Local Experts

Most local councils and community hubs know what’s going on in the area, even if it’s not advertised online.

Try:

Calling your county or district council and asking for the disability inclusion or sports development officer.

Visiting libraries, village halls, or parish councils to check community boards.

💪 2. Check National Charities with Local Reach

These organisations work across the UK and often know about local activities or can connect you with regional reps.

Limb Power – supporting amputees in physical activity and sport.

🎯 3. Contact Local Sports Clubs and Centres

Many clubs and outdoor centres welcome disabled athletes — they just don’t always advertise it clearly.

Look for:

🌐 4. Search Smarter Online

On Thursday 3rd April, Karen and Jo had the privilege of attending Beyond Amputation – From Adversity to Empowerment, a powerful conference hosted by Irwin Mitchell. The event marked the beginning of Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month.

The conference set out to take attendees “on an amputee’s journey — from the aftermath of a serious injury, through managing pain, to finding the right prosthetics and rediscovering the colour in life.“

We caught up with Karen and Jo afterwards to hear their reflections and insights from the day. Here’s what they had to share:

Karen’s Thoughts:

I found the day incredibly valuable. The structure of having expert presentations followed by client stories made the content more relatable and grounded the theory in real-world experiences. It allowed both clinicians and legal professionals to better understand how the insights translate into everyday practice. Ultimately, it reinforced our shared goal as clinicians: to support our clients in enhancing their quality of life and helping them reclaim a fulfilling lifestyle, as much as possible.

Inspirational Stories and Remarkable Resilience

The client stories were truly inspiring, demonstrating remarkable resilience and the belief that no obstacle is insurmountable. However, they also highlighted the ongoing nature of recovery, and the persistent challenges our clients face in striving for independence.

Each individual’s journey is unique—the way they cope, their mindset, and the support systems around them all play a part. I found Jan Smith’s (Psychologist, Healthy You Ltd) talk on psychological trauma especially impactful. It shed light on the far-reaching effects of trauma, such as the loss of identity, changes in relationships, the uncertainty of the future, and the struggle to rebuild a sense of self and purpose. The information gained from Holly King (Physiotherapist, HK Physio) who talked about how we can address the pain amputees suffer to achieve long term empowerment was also very valuable in understanding the complexity around pain following an amputation.

The day served as an important reminder: behind every client is a person navigating a deeply personal and often complex journey. As clinicians, we have a responsibility to offer not just clinical support, but also time, empathy, and space for healing. To enable and empower them to realise that nothing is impossible!

Jo’s Thoughts:

The conference took on a very engaging approach as they used both professional speakers and clients who told of their own experiences.

Each client brought a reality to the conference and an admiration within the room of professionals how they had been supported through their traumatic injury and continue to be positive within their lives. Some of the clients showed they could do things they were told they wouldn’t be able to. This really drove home the effect on a professional’s vocabulary and actions on conversing and treating clients.

With a MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) approach, each profession allowing the client to lead their rehabilitation, but all working together, clients can aspire and complete the things they always wanted to do.

Listening is Essential

Listen to the client – they have their own story, coping mechanisms and family support and dynamics.

The MDT needs to use client-centred approach to ensure the right professionals are involved who will facilitate a positive mental attitude and be mindful of the family and circumstances around the patient.

Thank you Irwin Mitchell and speakers for a truly inspiring day!

One of the LA’s notable initiatives is the “Lunch and Learn” events. The events are free of charge, though donations are welcomed to support the charity’s ongoing work.

We had the privilege of attending a Lunch & Learn event with one of our clients which was hosted by the Limbless Association at Dorset Orthopaedics. This visit was particularly special as it was our client’s first time engaging with the association. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for him to connect with some fellow participants, meet new people and chat to physiotherapists from Dorset Orthopaedics where he attends.

The event commenced with a mingling session, allowing attendees to connect and share their experiences. Leanne who works for the association and is an amputee with many years of experience, introduced the session. The guest speakers included a solicitor from Hudgell Solicitors who is the family liaison for the Limbless Association. She shared insights into her role and her personal connection to the community, being married to an amputee. Additionally, two volunteer visitors spoke about their journeys, emphasising their mission to support others and ensure that no one has to face similar challenges alone. Our client found these discussions deeply relatable, strengthening his desire to contribute and support individuals in similar situations.

Following the introduction, attendees enjoyed lunch providing an informal space for continued conversations, networking and sharing experiences. Our client took the opportunity to engage with several volunteer visitors, learning more about their roles and how they provide support.

The session featured a talk by one of the specialist physiotherapists on pain management, including discussions on phantom limb pain. This was particularly relevant to our client, as he resonated with many of the issues raised, including fatigue and pain in his stump. The discussion further validated his experiences and reinforced the importance of such community-led initiatives.

As the event wrapped up, our client reflected on the significance of these gatherings and the supportive environment they foster. We discussed the possibility of our client becoming a volunteer. Although there were no immediate openings for volunteer visitors, he expressed a strong interest in getting involved and contributing to future lunch and learn events and other events to assist. This visit not only provided valuable insights and connections but also inspired him to take an active role in giving back to the community.

Volunteering with the Limbless Association

Volunteers play a crucial role in the LA’s mission. The Volunteer Visitor (VV) program, for instance, pairs trained amputee volunteers with individuals who are about to undergo or have undergone amputation. This peer mentoring offers practical information and emotional support during a pivotal time.

Opportunities for Amputees

Beyond the Lunch and Learn sessions, the Limbless Association offers various services tailored to support amputees:

Support & Connect Hubs: These hubs facilitate connections among amputees, allowing them to share experiences and build friendships.

Amputee Learning Hub: Designed to educate and empower individuals living with limb loss, this initiative provides valuable resources and training opportunities.

The Limbless Association stands as a beacon of support for the limb loss community in the UK. Through initiatives like the Lunch and Learn sessions, comprehensive support services, and volunteer programs, the LA ensures that individuals affected by limb loss have access to the resources, connections, and encouragement they need to navigate their journeys with confidence.
